Abstract:
TiB2/Al2O3 composite cathodes for aluminum electrolysis, in which colloidal alumina was added as binder, were prepared by cold pressing-sintering method. The relationship between relative density, electrical resistivity, compressive strength and sintering temperature, sintering time, mass fraction of colloidal alumina was studied. The results showed that the relative density and the compressive strength increased with the improvement of sintering temperature, while the electrical resistivity of TiB2/Al2O3 composite cathode decreased. The relative density and the compressive strength increased with the improvement of the mass fraction of colloidal alumina, and the relative density and the compressive strength increased with the improvement of sintering time, while the electrical resistivity of TiB2/Al2O3 composite cathode first decreased and then increased. Furthermore, the optimized sintering techniques of composite cathode was obtained, and the composite cathode prepared by mixing TiB2 with colloidal alumina(25% mass fraction), sintered at 1 400 ℃ for 5 hours, has a electrical resistivity of 0.72 μΩ·m and a compressive strength of 38.70 MPa.
