Abstract:
Eutectic morphologies of as-cast Mg-Cu alloys with different copper content were observed with optical microscope(OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The formation mechanism of eutectic structure and faceted characteristic of CuMg2 phase were described. The results show that in hypoeutectic Mg-Cu alloys, the eutectic microstructures enriches and the primary phases declines with increase of copper content, and haloes structure in Mg-15%Cu alloy occurs. There are two intermetallic phases, i.e. CuMg2 and Cu2Mg phase in Mg-Cu alloys. The growth mechanism of CuMg2 phase is facet with edges and corners, while that of Cu2Mg phase is smooth non-facet.
