| Abstract: |
| Scraper, mostly made of bronze, is one kind of tool used by the ancient Yue people, popular in South China at Zhou Dynasties. Samples from four scrapers of Tanheli, Gaoshaji, and Yunhuqiao sited in Hunan Province were analyzed with SEM-EDS and Optical Microscopy (OM) to analyze alloy composition and metallographic structure. The results indicate that these scrapers are high-tin bronze alloy with tin content of 20% above. Metallic microstructure is Cu-Sn α solid solution with needle-like or thin strip, and (α δ) eutectoid matrix. This kind of bronze scraper with high content of tin is mostly fit for skiving rather than hacking. Popular usage of tin metal shows that main tin resources were under control of the ancient Yue people. The South is key to look for tin metal used for cast bronze during China''s pre-Qin period based on modern geological research. |
