Abstract:
Feasibility to extract copper and cobalt from cobalt-bearing converter slag applying spent pot-lining (including waste cathode carbon block and waste SiC side block) from aluminum smelters substitute to industrial coal as reductant was studied. It is found that under the same conditions, reduction smelting of cobalt-bearing converter slag is valid applying waste cathode carbon block and waste SiC side block as reductant. Recovery ratio of Cu and Co is 91.4% and 94.8% respectively with industrial coal as reductant. Fluorine in waste cathode carbon block can improve slag type and promote separation of slag and matte, and recovery ratio of Cu and Co is 97.3% and 99.3% respectively. Recovery ratio of Cu and Co is 95.4% and 90.0% respectively with waste silicon carbide as reductant. Compared to carbon based reductant, it is easier for silicon carbide with larger density to enter slag bath to participate in reaction, which is more conducive to application in industrial electric furnaces.
